SEISMIC IMAGING BENEATH SUMATRA ISLAND AND ITS SURROUNDINGS, INDONESIA, FROM LOCAL-REGIONAL P-WAVE EARTHQUAKE TOMOGRAPHY

چکیده
Sumatra Island and its surroundings, Indonesia, are one of the most active tectonics in world. The Aceh-Andaman earthquake, destructive earthquakes world, occurred there. It has attracted many earth scientists to apply various methods, including seismic tomography, understand island’s subsurface structure tectonic system. This study is first delineate imaging beneath island surroundings using a local-regional earthquake catalogue from Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, Geophysics (BMKG) seismicnetwork. tomographic P-wave (Vp) conducted this successfully delineated subduction slabs (high Vp), partial melting zones (low volcanic arcs Sumatran Fault Vp). relationship between zone arc on can be seen several vertical sections where occurs at depth about 100 km, which functions as magma feeding some volcanoes island. oceanic slab model also exhibits more pronounced steeper slope towards southern regions Island, possibly attributed slab’s aging process that direction. results highlight importance BMKG network structures Indonesia’s archipelago, especially main islands such Sumatra.

P-wave velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath Iceland from local earthquake tomography
The structure of the crust and uppermost mantle beneath Iceland, the keys to understanding the magma plumbing system of the hotspot and hotspot–ridge interaction, was poorly constrained in previous seismological investigations. Here we develop a three-dimensional P-wave velocity model of the Icelandic crust and uppermost mantle from tomographic inversion of over 3500 first-arrivals from local e...

متن کاملMantle seismic structure beneath the MELT region of the east pacific rise from P and S wave tomography
Relative travel time delays of teleseismic P and S waves, recorded during the Mantle Electromagnetic and Tomography (MELT) Experiment, have been inverted tomographically for upper-mantle structure beneath the southern East Pacific Rise. A broad zone of low seismic velocities extends beneath the rise to depths of about 200 kilometers and is centered to the west of the spreading center. The magni...
متن کاملTime-reversal imaging of seismic sources and application to the great Sumatra earthquake
[1] The increasing power of computers and numerical methods (like spectral element methods) allows continuously improving modelization of the propagation of seismic waves in heterogeneous media and the development of new applications in particular time reversal in the three-dimensional Earth. The concept of time-reversal (hereafter referred to as TR) was previously successfully applied for acou...
متن کاملSeismic tomography from local crustal earthquakes beneath eastern Rif Mountains of Morocco
We applied a tomographic method to image an aseismic strike–slip fault in North Morocco and found that the occurrence of earthquakes is not only controlled by the state of tectonic stress but also by material heterogeneity in the crust. We have constructed an integrated model of seismic, electric, magnetic and heat flow properties across northeastern Morocco primarily based on a tomography inve...
